Anderson: Fifth Generation
Children of James Anderson and Priscilla Coffin

James and Priscilla Coffin Anderson are direct ancestors. Priscilla was a Quaker and very likely kept to that faith, though there is no evidence to suggest that any of their children did so. This section of the family history develops a narrative about each of James and Priscilla’s children and their spouses.

James and Priscilla had eight children: William, born in 1810, died 1900; Rhoda born in 1812, died after 1881; John, born in 1813, died 1885; Joseph, born 1815, died 1889; Preston born in 1820, died after 1885; Harmon, born in 1824, died in 1885; Abijah Coffin, born in 1825, died in 1918; and James Robinson, born in 1835 and died in 1921. William, Preston, Harmon and Abijah all left Ohio, either just before the Civil War or after it concluded.

William married twice, first to Amarilla (Amelia) Dinsmore then to Lydia Ann Horney after Amarilla died leaving William with young children to look after. Rhoda also married twice, first to Paris Horney who died quite young, next to Nathan Mendenhall. John and Joseph carried on a family tradition of marrying sisters; John married Charity Stanfield, Joseph married her younger sister Matilda. Preston married Eliza Janes. Harmon married a cousin, Margaret Horney. Margaret’s grandfather and Harmon’s grandmother were brother and sister. Abijah married twice, first to Eliza Tilson and second to Casandra Kate Alney after Eliza’s death. James Robinson also married twice: first to Catherine Jay, next to Anna Sanders. James, Catherine and Anna are buried side by side in the Spring Valley Cemetery of Greene Co., Ohio.

William Anderson

William Anderson, abt 1890

William was born in August of 1810 in Ohio, his parents having come with his grandfather, John to Ohio in 1801, probably from North Carolina. The Anderson family were all farmers and held considerable land in Ohio. William was educated in Ohio and worked the farm of his father, eventually coming into land of his own.

He married Amarilla Dinsmore on 6 October 1831 in Ohio, Amarilla was 16 and William 21. I have been able to find no records or information relating to Amarilla, though an earlier relative did marry into the Dinsmore family in Ohio in 1817.

William and Amarilla had 6 children: James Frank born 1832, died 1880; Sarah born 1836, died 1924; Priscilla born 1839, died about 1920; Joseph Wilson born 1844, died before 1920; Ann born 1846, died 1862; and Drury P. born 1847, died 1928. Drury is the last child of this couple, Amarilla died shortly after Drury’s birth leaving William with a large and very young family.

William married second Lydia Ann Horney in 1848, Lydia was 15, William 38. Lydia and William are second cousins, William’s grandmother, Elizabeth Horney and Lydia’s grandfather, William Horney, are brother and sister. This same relationship between husband and wife is found for one of William’s younger brothers, Harmon Anderson and his wife, Margaret Horney. Both couples descend from the brother/sister pair.

In several genealogies/family histories to be found on-line William and Amarilla’s last son, Drury is listed as the son of William’s second wife, Lydia.

William Anderson

William Anderson, abt 1890

Shortly after Amarilla Dinsmore Anderson’s death in late 1847, William married Lydia Ann Horney. Lydia’s parents, Chipman Horney and Eleanor Janes had died in 1839 and 1844, respectively. Lydia may have been living with another Horney family one farm away in the sequence reported in the 1850 Census. That family, Jeffrey Horney and Catherine Janes, is Lydia’s Uncle and Aunt. Harmon Anderson, William’s younger brother, was living and working on William’s farm at that time. Harmon would marry Lydia’s cousin, Margaret, the next year.

Lydia Horney Anderson

William and Lydia had eleven children: Emma Zetta born 1849, died 1896; Ella Jane born 1854 death date unknown; Rhoda Margaret born 1855, death date unknown; Daniel Horney born 1856, death date unknown; Addie Rena born 1858, died 1943; Alice Katie born 1860, died 1948; Fred born 1865; died 1913; Oran Alvin born 1867, died 1944; Viola born 1870, died unknown; Mary Anderson born after 1872, died shortly after; and Maude Leota born 1875, died 1964. Thirteen of these children gathered at William’s funeral in November of 1900: Joseph, Sarah, Priscilla and Drury from William’s first marriage; Rhoda, Ella, Addie Rena, Daniel, Alice Katie, Fred, Maude and Viola from his second marriage.

In 1855 William bought a section of land southeast of Jefferson, Greene County, Iowa; in 1856 brought his family from Greene County, Ohio to Greene County, Iowa in a Conestoga wagon pulled by four horses. That trip is chronicled in The Anderson Story by William’s grandson, Joseph Snodgrass.

The family farmed in Jefferson Township and took on an important part as early settlers of this area of Iowa. Many of William’s children remained in Iowa and the “Anderson Clan” working with families who remained in Ohio created a family history in 1968. Maud Leota Anderson Davis was instrumental in that work along with one of her daughters and Williams nephew, Haramont Nathaniel Anderson.

Anderson: Fifth Generation:
32. John Anderson/Charity Stanfield

John Anderson, born 6 November 1813, is the 3rd child and 2nd son of James Anderson and Priscilla Coffin. John was born in Greene County, Ohio about a dozen years after the family arrived from either North Carolina or Delaware. John’s grandfather, John Anderson), is presumed to have moved from Kent County, Delaware to Guilford County, North Carolina where he owned land and lived among the Quakers of that region.

John grew up in the Sugar Creek area of Greene County, Ohio, probably working on his father’s farm. He married Charity Stanfield in December of 1837. Charity belonged to a known Quaker family that has its roots in North Carolina. The Stanfields appear to have migrated north to Ohio at the same time the Anderson family did.

John and Charity had 10 children – nine sons and one daughter. These children are: William (1838 – 1912); Preston (1840 – ); Harmon (1844 – 1897); Nathan (1847 – 1871); Zero and Cicero, twins (1849 – /1849 – 1871); Lovina Ruth (1851 – ); John Stanfield (1854 – 1934); Eli (1858 – abt 1870); and Charles F. (1864 – 1888).

The family is reported in the censuses of 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 living in Greene County, Ohio. In 1850 the location is given as Sugar Creek; from 1860 till John’s death in 1885 the residence is Spring Valley township along Caesars Creek. John’s parents, James Anderson and Priscill Coffin Anderson are said to be buried in the Quaker Cemetery along Caesars Creek. In 1850 James is farming on land just one farm away from his parents, James and Priscilla. His younger brother, Preston, is farming land next to James and Priscilla.

Charity Stanfield’s only brother, William, and his wife are on the farm next door to John and Charity in 1860. John’s sister Rhoda and her husband, Nathan Mendenhall, are also nearby. John’s younger brother, James Robinson Anderson is also farming in the vicinity. These families are also close by in 1870 and show clearly on the Spring Valley Township land ownership map of 1874.

In the 1870s John and Charity lost three of their children – Eli before 1870; Nathan in May of 1871 and Cicero (one of the twins) in June of 1871.

The 1880 census shows the household consisting of Charity and the two youngest sons, Preston and Charlie. However, their sons Zero (one of the twins), William and John Stanfield are farming on adjacent land, perhaps part of their father’s original holdings. John’s sister, Rhoda and her husband Nathan Mendenhall are also farming nearby.

Charity died between 1880 and 1900, John died in May of 1885.

32. John Anderson (James4, John3, James2, James1) was born on 6 Nov 1813 near Xenia, Greene County, Ohio and died on 1 May 1885 in Greene County, Ohio at age 71.
