Anderson: Fifth Generation:
Children of Lydia Anderson and Aaron Mendenhall

Lydia’s first husband, Paris Horney, died quite young leaving Lydia with a young family to raise on her own. Within a year of Paris’ death, Lydia married Aaron Mendenhall in 1809. Aaron descends from a family of Quakers who had settled in Ohio and been associated with the Anderson and Horney family for many years.

The children of this marriage are chronicled here. You will note in the following brief biographies that all of them lived out their lives in either Carroll or Elwood Township in the south eastern corner of Vermilion County, Illinois. Two of the children married into the Haworth family, a Quaker line that had come there from Tennessee and North Carolina. Many of the surnames of families surrounding the places where the Mendenhall children lived were identified with this religious community.

16 John Marshall MENDENHALL/Rebecca MILLS

John Marshall Mendenhall is the oldest of Lydia Anderson Horney’s second marriage to Aaron Mendenhall. He was born 3 November 1809 in Greene County, Ohio and died 3 May 1897, just a few months shy of his 88th birthday. John and his father, Aaron had moved to Vermilion County, Illinois in 1824 where they settled among the Quakers of that community.

John Marshall married Rebecca Mills 24 November 1821 in Vermilion County, Indiana. John and Rebecca had twelve children: Millican (1831-1886); James (1832-1845); Charity Jane (1833-1915); Sarah Jane (1835- ); Rhoda (1837-1865); Francis Marion (1839-1866); Mary (1842- ); Aaron Horney (1844-1910); John Marshall (1845- ); Lydia (1847-1851); Rebecca (1851-1884); and Louisa (1854-1936). Two of these children bear the names of either a parent (John Marshall) or a grand-parent (Charity, Aaron and Lydia).

In 1850 John Marshall and Rebecca lived in Vermilion County, Illinois with their children: Milliken (Millican), age 19; Jane, age 17; Sarah, age 15; Rhoda, age 13; Francis, age 10; Mary, age 8; Aaron 6; John, age 5 and Lydia, age 3. John and Rebecca’s second son, James had died at 12 in 1845.

The Mendenhall family of John Marshall and Rebecca continued to live in Carroll, Vermilion County, Illinois. John is a farmer and he and Rebecca have three of their children still in the household: Jane (Sarah Jane?), age 25; Emeline (Rebecca Emeline), age 18; and Louisa age 15.

In 1880, John Marshall and Rebecca are still in Carroll, Vermilion County, Illinois. John has continued to farm, Rebecca is keeping house. The couple has their youngest daughter, Louisa, age 26 and their grandson, Silas, age 22 living with them. Silas is farm hand, probably helping the elderly couple manage the farm – John is 70 and Rebecca is 67. John lived on in Vermilion County, another 17 years, dying there at age 87. Rebecca had died eight years earlier at the age of 77. Rachel Thomas has a photograph on her Ancestry.com web site (http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/8115637/person/-252573085) of John Marshall when he was probably in his 80s.

Anderson: Fifth Generation
17. Aaron MENDENHALL/Rebecca HAWORTH/Elizabeth Jane HAWORTH

Aaron: born in Ohio, part of the Quaker community there, moved to Vermilion County, Illinois where also a part of that Quaker Community. Married first Rebecca Haworth, then Rebecca’s sister, Elizabeth Jane Haworth after the death of Rebecca in 1857.

Aaron Mendenhall was born 22 September1811, the second child and son of Lydia Anderson Horney Mendenhall and Aaron Mendenhall. He spent his early years in Greene County, Ohio, but most likely moved with his father and older brother to Vermilion County Illinois in 1824 to join the Quaker community there.

Aaron married Rebecca Haworth 10 January 1834 in Union, Indiana. Rebecca is the daughter of John Haworth (1778-1863) and Cecilia Elmore (1778-1868). Aaron and Rebecca had six children: Mary Ann Polly (Polly Ann) (1835-1932); Richard Gardner (1839-1905); Lydia (1842-1859); Olive (1844-1935); James Anderson (1847-1930); and William (1849-1917). Though Aaron and Rebecca were married in Indiana, they most likely joined the Quaker community in Vermilion County, Illinois. All of their children were born there according to the 1850 census. In that census the household consisted of Aaron, his wife Rebecca and their six children: Polly Ann, age 14; Lydia age 12; Richard age 10; Oliver age 5; James age 3 and William age 1. According to this census, the information I have from the Boden-Dunlap Tree at Ancestry.com has the incorrect sequence of the children and has listed one as Olive rather than Oliver.

In 1850 Aaron’s sister, Lydia Mendenhall Baird and her husband Joseph Baird were living one farm sequence away from Aaron and Rebecca.

The family is still in Carroll Township, Vermilion County, Illinois in 1860. The oldest daughter, Mary Ann Polly (Polly Ann) has left the household. Rebecca died in 1857 and Aaron remarried, choosing Rebecca’s younger sister, Elizabeth Jane as his second wife. Elizabeth Jane and Aaron were married 15 September 1858 in Vermilion County, Illinois. The household consisted of Aaron and his second wife Elizabeth and the children from the first marriage: Lydia, age 22; Richard, age 20, Olivia (Oliver?, Olive?) age 16; James age 12 and William age 11. Richard appears to have married and his presumed wife, Sarah, is living in the Mendenhall household.

There are again some issues concerning the gender of Olive/Olivia/Oliver. This individual is listed as a son on the 1850 census, as a daughter by the Boden-Dunlap Tree, and as a daughter Olivia in the 1860 census.

By 1870 all of Aaron and Rebecca’s children have left home, the household is still on a farm in Carroll Township, Vermilion County. The household of Aaron and his second wife, Elizabeth, now consists of the two parents and their children: Miles age 10; and Milton age 8.

Aaron died 20 December 1872 in Carroll Township, Vermilion County, Illinois. Elizabeth and her two sons by Aaron continued to live in Carrol Township and are recorded in the 1880 census. Elizabeth is widowed head of household, Miles is age 19 and Milton is 17. According to the census record, Miles and Milton are farming the land held now presumably owned by Elizabeth.

Elizabeth died 6 years after the census in 1886 at the age of 65, a few months short of her 66th birthday.

17 Aaron Mendenhall/Rebecca Haworth

17. Aaron Mendenhall (Lydia Anderson4, John3, James2, James1) was born on 22 Sep 1811 in Xenia, Greene County, Ohio and died on 20 Dec 1872 in Indianola, Vermilion, Illinois at age 61.

Aaron married Rebecca Haworth, daughter of John Haworth and Cecilia Elmore, on 30 Jan 1834 in Union, Indiana, USA. Rebecca was born on 12 Feb 1808 in Jefferson, Tennessee, USA and died on 16 Aug 1857 in Indianola, Vermillion, Illinois, USA at age 49.

Children from this marriage were:

Anderson: Fifth Generation
18 Lydia MENDENHALL/Joseph BAIRD

Lydia: born 1813 in Greene County Ohio, probably moved with family to Vermilion County, Illinois in the 1820s. Married Joseph Baird in 1835. Lydia and Joseph had eight children: Ella, John Jilpus, David A., Nancy Ellen, Jane, Emily Frances, Joseph, and William Silas.

Lydia Mendenhall is the third child and oldest daughter of Aaron Mendenhall and Lydia Anderson Horney. Lydia Mendenhall was born 6 March 1813 in Greene County, Ohio. Between 1820 and 1830 her parents and the family had moved from Greene County, Ohio to Vermilion County Illinois.

Lydia married Joseph Baird (Beard?) on 26 February 1835 in Vermilion County, Illinois. Joseph is the son of David Baird (1760-1837) and Eleanor Barkelow (1766-1837), he was born 19 March 1801 in Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky. Lydia and Joseph had eight children: Ella (1833- ); John Jilpus (1835-1916); David A. (1837- ); Nancy Ellen (1839- ); Jane (1844-1938); Emily Frances (1846-1925); Joseph (1848-1849); and William Silas (1853-1924).

The family is living in Carroll Township, Vermilion County, Illinois in 1850. The household consists of Joseph and his wife Lydia, aged 69 and 43 respectively, and their children: John J. age 24; probably his wife Ellen age 19; E. A. (David A?) age 17; Jane age 15; Eliza (Emily Frances?) age 13 and W. S. (William Silas) age 6.

This 1860 census record is particularly challenging as the census taker seems to have missed recording the family as a separate household, so in the indexing the family is included as part of the Young household that immediately precedes them on the census sheet. The census taker also consistently rendered the name Baird as Beaird throughout the pages for this township. The transcription compounds the error by rendering Beaird as Beavis so that Joseph his wife and several of their children do not appear in the search for either Baird or Beaird. Since this page occurs very close to the end of the pages for Carroll Township, I really wonder if the census taker was not very tired when he recorded the information.

The family was easier to locate in the 1870 census. Joseph had died the year before the census was taken and his widow, Lydia is listed as head of the household with four of her children still in the household: John G., age 34; David age 32; Emily age 21 and her youngest son, William S age 16.

The 1880 census finds the household in much the same configuration, Lydia is head with three of her children living in that household: John G(J?) age 44; Emily F. age 30; and William S. age 26. At the top of this last page of the Carroll Township record is her son, David A. Baird and his wife, Mary J. and their daughter, E. Mary. This latter couple is living in the household of David’s mother-in-law, Mary Baum.

Lydia died 17 February 1891. Since there are no remaining records from the 1890 census our tracking of this family ends with the information gleaned from the 1880 census and the contributions of family historians to the on-line services.

18. Lydia Mendenhall/Joseph Baird

18. Lydia Mendenhall (Lydia Anderson4, John3, James2, James1) was born on 6 Mar 1813 in Greene County, Ohio and died on 17 Feb 1891 at age 77.

Lydia married Joseph Baird, son of David Baird (1760-1837) and Eleanor Barkelow (1766-1837), on 26 Feb 1835 in Vermilion County, Illinois. Joseph was born on 19 Mar 1801 in Kentucky, USA and died on 18 Aug 1869 in Indianola, Vermillion, Illinois, USA at age 68.

Children from this marriage were:

F    i. Ella Baird was born in 1833 in Indianola, Vermilion, Illinois.

M    ii. John Jilpus Baird was born on 31 Dec 1835 in Carroll, Vermillion County, Illinois, USA and died on 7 Jul 1916 in Carroll, Vermillion County, Illinois, USA at age 80.

M    iii. David A. Baird was born in 1837 in Indianola, Vermillion, Illinois, USA.

F    iv. Nancy Ellen Baird was born in 1839 in Carroll, Vermillion County, Illinois, USA.

M    vii. Joseph Baird was born on 10 Jul 1848 and died on 23 Sep 1849 at age 1.

M    viii. William Silas Baird was born on 26 Aug 1853 in Indianola, Vermillion, Illinois, USA and died on 21 May 1924 in Carroll, Vermillion County, Illinois, USA at age 70.

Anderson: Fifth Generation
19. Nancy MENDENHALL/Moses Lund LARRANCE

Nancy: born 1816 in Greene County, Ohio. Moved from Ohio to Illinois between 1820 and 1830. Married Moses Lund Larrance in 1838 when she was 19. She and Moses had nine children: John, Charity Jane, Elizabeth Betsey, Richard, Emily, Lydia B., David Crockett, Paris H. and Joseph. Nancy died in 1901, Moses in 1896.

Nancy Mendenhall is the third child and oldest daughter of Aaron Mendenhall and Lydia Anderson Horney Mendenhall. Nancy was born 14 June 1816 in Greene County, Ohio. The family moved from Ohio to Vermilion County, Illinois in the mid-1920s when Nancy was a young child. They settled there among the Quakers of that community. Aaron Mendenhall descends from a line of Quakers and he kept the family in contact with that community.

Nancy married Moses Lund Larrance (Laurence, Lawrence) 1 November 1838 in Vemilion County, Illinois. Moses is the son of John Larrance (1796-1837) and Ruth Mills (1796-1876). He was born 8 May 1818 in Jefferson County, Tennessee and died 3 November 1896 in Carroll Township, Vermilion County, Illinois.

Nancy and Moses had ten children: John (1842-1917); William L. (1843-1925); Elizabeth Betsey (1845-1929); Richard (1847-1917); Emily (1849-1901); Charity Jane (1850- ); Lydia B. (1856-1908); David Crockett (1857-1908); Paris H. (1859- ); and Joseph (1861- ). These children were identified in family trees discovered after the family group sheet below was created – that will be updated when I have completed working on this Anderson line.

The family is counted in District 21 of Vermilion County, Illinois census of 1850. The household consists of Moses and Nancy, aged 30 and 33 respectively and their five children: John, age 9; William age 7; Betsey age 5; Richard age 3 and Emily age 1. Moses is a farmer and living only a few farms away from his mother, Ruth Mills Larrance and possibly a cousin, Levi Mills who is farming the adjacent home/property.

By 1860 the family has expanded by four more children and Moses’ mother, Ruth Mills Laurence (Larrance) has joined the household. Moses is 42, Nancy is 43. Their children are: John, age 19; William age 17; Elizabeth (Betsey in the previous census) age 13; Richard age 12; Emily age 10; Charity age 8; Lydia age 5; David age 3 and Charles who is only 6 months old at the time of the census. Note that the family is listed under the surname Laurence in this census, Moses is farming and helped on the farm by his two oldest sons, John and William. The family is recorded as living in Elwood Township of Vermilion County, Illinois.

The family is still in Elwood Township, Vermilion County, Illinois in the 1870 census, this time enumerated under the surname Lawrence. Two Mills families are close by as well as a Cannady family – Emily, Moses and Nancy’s fifth child will eventually marry a Cannady.

Moses is 52, Nancy is also listed as 52 in this census. The children still in the household are: Richard, age 24; Emily age 21; Charity age 19; Lydia age 14; David age 12 and Paris age 10. A Jane Lawrence, age 20 and Allen, age 1 are also enumerated as part of this household. Perhaps Jane is Richard’s wife and Allen their first son. John Lawrence, the oldest son is farming the property adjacent to the one where Moses and Nancy now live.

By 1880 the Larrance household has dwindled to Moses, Nancy and the youngest son Paris. The family is still on the farm in Elwood Township, Vermilion County. Moses is 61, Nancy 62 and Paris 21. Family members are on the farms adjacent, a Jonathon Larrance is on one side, Moses and Nancy’s son David and his family is on the other side.

Moses died 11 March 1896 in Elwood, Vermilion County, Illinois.

In 1900 Nancy is living with Emily Larrance Cannaday and her family. Nancy is now 82 years old. She died 10 May 1901 In Elwood Township, Vermilion County, Illinois, the year after this census was completed.

19. Nancy Mendenhall/Moses Lund Larrance

Anderson: Fifth Generation
20. Elizabeth MENDENHALL/John Marshall MILLS

Elizabeth: Born 1818 in Ohio, moved with parents in mid-1820s to Vermilion County, Illinois. Married John Mills1839. They had three children: Jane; Richard and William. John died relatively young at age 28 in 1845.

Elizabeth Mendenhall is the fourth child, second daughter of Aaron Mendenhall and Lydia Anderson Horney Mendenhall. Elizabeth was born 14 September 1818 in Greene County, Ohio. The Mendenhall family moved from Ohio to Vermilion County, Illinois about 1824 or 1825.

Elizabeth, at the age 20, married John Marshall Mills 4 July 1839. John was born 4 August 1817 in Lost Creek, Jefferson, Tennessee, the son of John Mills (1774-1846) and Charity Mendenhall (1777-1858). The couple had three children: Jane (1840-1918); Richard (1841-1925) and William H. (1843-1910).

John died 1 March 1845 a bit less than two years after his youngest son was born. Elizabeth did not remarry and managed to carry on with her three children, perhaps because she was located amid a number of relatives who were Quakers and likely very involved in looking after members of their community.

The 1850 census record shows the family intact and a probable relative, Fred Mendenhall and possible his wife Jane living with them. The actual relationship of these latter two is not clear as the census did not record relationship of members to the head-of-house. Elizabeth is 32, her children are Jane, age 10, Richard age 8 and William age 6. Elizabeth’s mother-in-law Charity Mendenhall Mills, age 81 is living with the family.

By 1860 the household had shrunk to the immediate family of Elizabeth. Elizabeth is 41, her daughter Jane is 20, Richard is 18 and William H. is 16. A review of the census page on which Elizabeth and her family appear shows there are no other immediate family in the vicinity, a check of the pages either side of the one on which this household appears shows the same thing.

Elizabeth, her sons Richard and William are living in the household of Adam Mills, age 34 in the 1870 census. Elizabeth is 51, Richard is 27 and William 25. Richard and William as well as Adam are farming the land that would have been left to the family when John Mills died.

The 1880 census lists only Richard and his mother, Elizabeth as part of the household. Elizabeth is head-of-house, her son is farming the property. The family is surrounded by familiar surnames: there are two Haworth families near-by, on the preceding page is Elizabeth’s older sister, Nancy Mendenhall and her husband Moses Larrance. Next to Larrance family is their son David Larrance and his family.

Elizabeth is living with her oldest son Richard and his wife of eleven years, Martha H. Thomas. Richard and Martha were married 21 March 1889. The household consists of Richard, age 58, Martha age 35, their children Claude J., age 6, Edgar T. age 4, and Richard D. age 2. The household also includes a niece and nephew perhaps of Martha.

Elizabeth died 18 April 1904 in Elwood Township, Vermilion County, Illinois.

20. Elizabeth Mendenhall/John Marshall Mills

20. Elizabeth Mendenhall (Lydia Anderson4, John3, James2, James1) was born on 14 Sep 1818 in Dayton, Ohio and died on 18 Apr 1904 in Vermilion County, Illinois at age 85.

Elizabeth married John Marshall Mills, son of John Mills (1774-1846) and Charity Mendenhall (1777-1858), on 4 Jul 1839 in Vermillion Grove, Vermillion, Illinois, USA. John was born on 4 Aug 1817 in Lost Creek, Jeferson, Tennessee, USA and died on 1 Mar 1845 in Vermilion County, Illinois at age 27.

Children from this marriage were:

F    i. Jane H. Mills was born on 6 May 1840 in Vermillion Grove, Vermillion, Illinois, USA and died on 28 Aug 1918 in St Joseph, Champaign, Illinois, USA at age 78.

M    ii. Richard Mills was born on 21 Nov 1841 in Vermillion Grove, Vermillion, Illinois, USA and died on 16 Sep 1925 in Vermilion County, Illinois at age 83.

M    iii. William H. Mills was born on 18 Feb 1843 in Vermillion Grove, Vermillion, Illinois, USA and died in 1910 in Carroll, Vermillion County, Illinois, USA at age 67.

Anderson: Fifth Generation
21. Richard MENDENHALL/Louisa HAWORTH

Richard: Born 1822, moved with family from Ohio to Illinois in mid-1820s. Married Louisa Haworth in 1849. They had a total of four children: Parris Horney (1850-1922); James Monroe (1854-1882); Hannah Elizabeth (1868- ); and Mary Catherine (1870- ).

Richard Mendenhall was born 8 February 1822 in Ohio, the youngest child and last son of Aaron Mendenhall and Lydia Anderson Horney Mendenhall. He moved with the family from Ohio to Vermilion County, Illinois. On 11 September 1849 he married Louisa Haworth in Union County, Indiana. Louisa is the daughter of James Haworth (1771-1842) and Mary Elmore (1782-1852). Richard was raised in a family associated with the Quakers in Ohio, North Carolina and Illinois. When he married Louisa Harwood he married into a family that has a long and rich history within the Quaker tradition (see Haworth Family Association of America).

Richard and Louisa lived in Vermilion County, Illinois in 1850, Richard’s mother, Lydia was living with them.

The family has grown with the addition of two sons by the 1860 census. Richard is 37, Louisa is 33, their two sons, Parris age 9 and James W. age 6 are listed in the household. Richard has a hired hand helping with the farm – Patrick Baum.

Paris is 21 and James 16 when the family is recorded in the 1870 census. There is a Miranda Skim in the household, but no indication as to her relationship to the family. Richard is 48, Louisa (Lewisa in this record) is 45. The family is farming. The Haworth Family Association of America genealogy at RootsWeb WorldConnect Project lists an Hannah Elizabeth Mendenhall as born 25 March 1868. Since Hannah Elizabeth is not recorded in this 1870 census we can only assume that she died sometime before January 1870.

In 1880 the family household is made up of Richard and his wife, Louisa and their adopted daughter Mary Catherine Williams. Mary Catherine is 9 years old, Richard is 58 and Louisa is 54.
