Anderson: Fourth Generation
Esther Anderson/James Horney/James McKillip
Lydia Anderson/Paris Horney/Aaron Mendenhall
John Horney Anderson/Hannah Painter
Rhoda Anderson/William H. Horney
James Anderson/Priscilla Coffin

John Anderson and Elizabeth Horney had five children: Esther, Lydia, John Horney, Rhoda and James. Communities must have been small and relationships among members quite close. Although usually frowned upon in most families, the three Anderson girls married first cousins: Esther married James Horney; Lydia married Paris Horney; and Rhoda married William Horney. The three Horney boys were the sons of Elizabeth Horney Anderson’s brother, William Horney and Hannah Harriet Chipman. I have been unable to establish that this generation of Andersons (and Horneys) are Quakers. However, Lydia’s second husband, Aaron Mendenhall came from a prominent North Carolina and Ohio Quaker family. The Mendenhall clan is well documented on sources on the web: The Mendenhall Family Association, and The Mendenhall Family (on RootsWeb)

Only the children of John Anderson and Elizabeth Horney are included in this section of the history of the Anderson family. I have chosen not to follow on with the John’s brothers Daniel and Elija Anderson identified in the previous generation.

Esther’s story is written up in Our Anderson Story in Narrative. (The narrative provides documentation for each individual in the story.) Esther married her cousin, James Horney after the families migrated to Ohio. They settled there where their seven children were born, five survived to adult-hood. These children are: John, William, Hannah, Paris and Anderson. As was often the case among these early generations, given names are repeated from one generation to the next: Hannah and William are the given names of James parents, Paris is a Chipman family name and of course, Anderson is Elizabeth’s maiden name. Chipman is James Horney’s mother’s maiden name.

John and Elizabeth’s second daughter, Lydia also married her first cousin Paris Horney. Paris died at a relatively young age and Lydia married second, Aaron Mendenhall. Lydia’s story is expanded in Our Anderson Story in Narrative. Lydia and Paris had five children: Deborah, Anderson, Rhoda, Esther, and Parris. Lydia’s husband Paris died in 1808, she married Aaron Mendenhall a year later. Lydia and Aaron had seven more children: John Marshal, Aaron, Lydia, Nancy, Elizabeth, William and Richard. Lydia died in 1850 in Illinois. This family was a member of the Quaker community in Illinois.

John Horney Anderson, born in 1781, married Hannah Painter in Ohio on 19 February 1806. John’s story can be found in Our Anderson Story in Narrative. Hannah Painter was condemned by her Quaker meeting for “marrying out of union.” Apparently she managed to reconcile with the Quaker meetings as she remained active in the Society of Friends in Ohio, Indiana and Iowa where she died between 1860 and 1870. John Horney and Hannah had six children — Levi, David, Martha, Elizabeth, Jesse and John. John Horney died on 27 September 1841 in Clinton Indiana and is buried in the Union Cemetery, Lauramie Township, Indiana.

Rhoda Anderson, John and Elizabeth’s fourth child, was born in 1784 in Delaware. Rhoda married another Horney, William, on 20 February 1806 in Fayette County, Ohio — just one day after her older brother John Horney Anderson married Hannah Painter. You can read more about Rhoda and William in Our Anderson Story in Narrative. Rhoda and William had seven children — Esther, Lydia, Peter, Sarah, Paris, John D. and Mary Ann. Rhoda died in 1861 in Tippecanoe, Indiana; William died there in 1847.

John and Elizabeth’s last child and youngest son, James, is our direct ancestor in this generation. James was born in 1786 in Delaware and died in December of 1858 and is presumed buried in Caesar Creek Quaker Cemetery in Greene County, Ohio. James married Priscilla Coffin of the Nantucket Island Coffin Lineage on 16 November 1809 near Xenia, Greene County, Ohio. James and Priscilla had a large family, eight children in all. The oldest is William, followed by Rhoda, John, Joseph, Preston, Harmon, Abijah and James Robinson. Harmon is our direct ancestor.

As with the other siblings, more about James Anderson is in Our Anderson Story in Narrative

Anderson: Fourth Generation
6. Esther ANDERSON/James HORNEY

Esther Anderson is the oldest of John Anderson and Elizabeth Horney’s five children. She was born in 1776 in North Carolina according to a genealogy by Fonda Carrol in the World Connect Project. I do not have definitive documentation as to the date and place of birth of Esther, she is mentioned in John Anderson’s will, probated in Xenia, Ohio in 1816.

She came to Ohio with the family about 1800 or so. She would have been 24 years old at the time. Esther married James Horney, her first cousin, in 1800 in Lafayette County, Ohio. James parents had probably migrated to Ohio from the Delaware/Maryland border at the same time as the Anderson family did. James father and Esther’s mother are brother and sister.

The Horney family were farmers in the Miami River valley and probably had links to the Quaker community there, though I have not found any records in the Quaker Genealogical Records to confirm this guesstimate.

James and Esther had seven children, five of whom survived to adulthood: John (b. 1804); William (b. 1807); Hannah (b. 1809); Paris (b. 1810); and Anderson (b. 1819). I have not traced out these descendants beyond the children of Paris Horney and Anderson Horney, so our interest in this family essentially ends with this family.

James died relatively young in 1824 (age 50) and only five years after the birth of his youngest son. Esther married William McKillup (McCallup and other variations) in 1837. He died 10 years later. Esther died in Fayette County, Ohio some time after 1850 — I have located no records that give her actual death date.

This family, including the parents William Horney and Hannah Harriet Chipman, are among the very earliest settlers in this part of Ohio.

6. Esther Anderson (John3, James2, James1) was born on 23 Feb 1776 in North Carolina and died after 1850 in Jefferson Township, Fayette, Ohio. Other names for Esther were Esther Horney and Esther McKillip.

Esther married James Horney, son of William Horney, Sr and Hannah Harriet Chipman, in 1800 in Fayette County, Ohio. James was born in 1774 in Guilford County, North Carolina and died in 1824 in Fayette County, Ohio at age 50.

Children from this marriage were:

Anderson married Mahala Jackson (d. 7 Jan 1905) on 20 Oct 1842 in Lincoln, Logan, Illinois, United States Of America.

Anderson: Fourth Generation
6. Esther ANDERSON/William McKILLIP

James died relatively young in 1824 (age 50) and only five years after the birth of his youngest son. Esther married William McKillup (McCallup and other variations) in 1837. He died 10 years later. Esther died in Fayette County, Ohio some time after 1850 — I have located no records that give her actual death date.

Esther next married William McKillip, son of Hugh J. McKillip and Agnes White Hannah, on 13 Dec 1837 in Jeffersonville, Fayette, Ohio, USA. William was born on 11 Oct 1785 in Stokes County, North Carolina and died on 21 Sep 1847 in Fayette County, Ohio at age 61.

Anderson: Fourth Generation
7. Lydia ANDERSON/Paris HORNEY

Lydia Anderson is our 3rd great-aunt. She is the second child and second daughter of John Anderson and Elizabeth Horney. Lydia was born November 7, 1778 in Maryland. Her early years were spent on a farm on the Maryland/Delaware border and perhaps with the family in North Carolina.

She was probably raised in and around Quakers in the DelMarVa area and in North Carolina. After a brief stay in North Carolina, the family moved to the Caesar Creek area of Greene County, Ohio about 1800 or perhaps five years earlier.

Lydia married Paris Horney in Fayette County, Ohio in 1795, Paris was 19 and Lydia 17. Paris is Lydia’s first cousin — the same relationship as between her older sister, Esther and her husband James. She and Paris had five children: Deborah (b. 1797); Anderson (b. 1800); Rhoda (b. 1802); Esther (b. 1806) and Parris (b. 1807). Paris died quite young (age 32 Lydia was 30), shortly after the birth of his name-sake son, Parris in 1808.

7. Lydia Anderson (John3, James2, James1) was born on 7 Nov 1778 in Maryland and died in Feb 1850 in Vermilion County, Illinois at age 71. Other names for Lydia were Lydia Mendenhall and Lydia Horney.

Lydia married Paris Horney, son of William Horney, Sr and Hannah Harriet Chipman, in 1795 in Fayette County, Ohio. Paris was born in 1776 in Guilford County, North Carolina and died in 1808 in Greene County, Ohio at age 32.

Children from this marriage were:

F    i. Deborah Horney was born in 1797 in Fayette County, Ohio.

M    ii. Anderson Horney was born in 1800 in Fayette County, Ohio and died in 1849 at age 49.

Rhoda married John Coppas, son of ____________ ____________ and ____________ ____________, about 1820 in Ohio. John was born about 1785 and died about 1865 about age 80.

F    iv. Esther Horney was born on 12 Dec 1806 in Fayette County, Ohio and died on 13 Nov 1836 in Vermillion, Illinois at age 29

M    v. Parris Horney was born on 11 Nov 1807 in Fayette County, Ohio and died on 15 Aug 1877 at age 69.

Anderson: Fourth Generation
7. Lydia ANDERSON/Aaron MENDENHALL

Shortly after Paris’ death, Lydia married Aaron Mendenhall on March 2, 1809 in Greene County, Ohio. Aaron was a member of the Quaker community and was born 18 September 1772 at Deep River, Guilford County, North Carolina. Aaron had also been previously married to Lovie Jennings. Aaron and Lovie had three children: Malachi (1799-1880); Catherine (1800-1890); and Iva (1802-1875).

Lydia and Aaron had seven more children: John Marshal (b. 1809, d. 1897); Aaron (b 1811, d. 1872); Lydia (b. 1813, d. 1891); Nancy (b. 1816, d. 1901); Elizabeth (b 1818, d. 1904); William (b ~1820); and Richard (b. 1822, d. 1889). By 1820 Aaron and Lydia had moved to Vermilion County, Illinois. The evidence that I have seen indicates that Lydia and Aaron lived among the Quakers in this part of Illinois. Both died there and are buried in the cemetery there.

I have written a bit longer piece about Lydia Anderson, Paris Horney and Aaron Mendenhall in Our Anderson Story in Narrative

Lydia next married Aaron Mendenhall, son of Richard Mendenhall and Jane Thornbrugh, on 2 Mar 1809 in Greene County, Ohio. Aaron was born on 18 Sep 1772 in Deep River, Guilford County, North Carolina and died on 21 Mar 1840 in Vermilion County, Illinois at age 67.

Anderson: Fourth Generation
8. John Horney ANDERSON/Hannah PAINTER

John Horney Anderson is the third child and oldest son of John Anderson and Elizabeth Horney. He was born in Kent County, Delaware in 1781. As with all of the children of John and Elizabeth, I have little additional documentation for the family other than what I have been able to locate at Ancestry.com and other on-line genealogy pages. Many of the family genealogies at Ancestry are suspect as they would seem to have created the listing for this family simply by incorporating what they found on the web into their pages. This suspicion is based upon the listing of children two or three times – something that seems a probable occurrence when a find is indiscriminately incorporated.

John Horney very probably migrated with the family from the Maryland/Delaware border of the eastern shore of Chesapeake to North Carolina and then to Ohio sometime between 1795 and 1800 or so. As you review the various notes about these children you will see quite a range of dates relating to their first appearance in Ohio.

John Horney married Hannah Painter on 19 February 1806 in Greene County, Ohio. John was 24 and Hannah 19. Hannah is the daughter of David Painter and Martha Patsy Faulkner, both members of the Quaker community in the Caesars Creek area of Greene County. Hannah was condemned for “marrying out of union.” John and Hannah had five children: David (b. 1808, d. 1839); Martha (b. 1809, d. after 1880); Elizabeth (b. 1820); Jesse (b. 1812); and John Horney, Jr. (b. 1813, d. 1894).

John Horney died in 1841 in Tippecanoe, Indiana and is buried in Union Cemetery in that county. After John Horney died, Hannah moved to McLean County, Illinois where she was living with her daughter. By 1860 she was living in Polk County, Iowa where she lived with her daughter. I have presumed that she died there some time between the 1860 and 1870 federal censuses.

You may read more about John Horney and his family in Our Anderson Story in Narrative

8. John Horney Anderson (John3, James2, James1) was born on 30 Apr 1781 in Kent County, Delaware, died on 27 Sep 1841 in Clinton Co., Indiana at age 60, and was buried in Lauramie Twp, Tippecanoe Co., Indiana, Union Cemetery.

Anderson: Fourth Generation
9. Rhoda ANDERSON/William H. HORNEY

Rhoda Anderson is the third daughter and fourth child of John Anderson and Elizabeth Horney. She was born in Kent County, Delaware in 1784 and most likely traveled with her family from Delaware to North Carolina before settling in Ohio sometime between 1795 and 1800.

Rhoda married her first cousin, William H. Horney in Fayette County, Ohio on 20 February 1806. Rhoda is the third daughter to marry into this Horney family. Their first child, Esther, was born in 1808. The couple had six more children: Lydia and Peter (b. 1810); Sarah (b. 1815); Paris (b. abt 1819); John (b. 1823); and Mary Ann (b. 1827). All of the children are reported to have been born in Ohio.

The family migrated from Ohio to Tippecanoe County, Indiana where they settled near Rhoda’s brother John Horney Anderson. William died in 1847 and is buried in the Horney Cemetery in Lauramie Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana.

After William’s death Rhoda stayed on the family farm with her son, Paris his family. Rhoda is listed as head of household, but Paris is indicated as owner of the property along with his brother John who is also living in the same household in 1850. In 1860, Rhoda is 76 and living with her daughter Mary and her husband John Coyner in Madison, Montgomery County, Indiana. Rhoda died the next year and is presumed to be buried in the Horney Cemetery, Tippecanoe County, Indiana.

A bit more detail as well as sources and references about Rhoda Anderson and William Horney can be found in Our Anderson Story in Narrative.

9. Rhoda Anderson (John3, James2, James1) was born in 1784 in Kent County, Delaware, died in 1861 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana at age 77, and was buried in 1861 in Horney Cemetery, Lauramie Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. Other names for Rhoda were Rhoda Coppas and Rhoda Horney.

Rhoda married William H. Horney II, son of William Horney, Sr and Hannah Harriet Chipman, on 20 Feb 1806 in Fayette County, Ohio. William was born circa 1784 in Guilford County, North Carolina, died in 1847 in Crawfordsville Tippecanoe County, Indiana at age 63, and was buried on 16 Jun 1847 in Horney Cemetery, Lauramie Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana.

Children from this marriage were:

25 F    vii. Mary Ann Horney was born on 2 Nov 1827 in Fayette County, Ohio and died on 18 Mar 1900 in Montgomery Co. Indiana at age 72.

Mary married John Coyner (d. 20 Aug 1862) on 8 Aug 1844 in Greene Co., Ohio.

Anderson: Fourth Generation
10. James ANDERSON/Priscilla COFFIN

James Anderson is the second son, fifth child of John Anderson and Elizabeth Horney. According to the best information that I have, James was born in Delaware in 1786. The family is presumed to have left Delaware sometime after James was born. According to one source, John, Elizabeth and family left Delaware and settled briefly in Guilford County, North Carolina, most probably among the Quaker/Nicholite community there.

I have been unable to locate any evidence of the family in the Quaker records for the various meeting houses in North Carolina – the most probable would have been the New Garden meeting. The Coffin family did belong to that meeting house. John, Elizabeth and family presumably left North Carolina in 1802 or 1803 and moved north to the Miami Valley in Ohio. They would have been among the very first families to settle in what eventually became Caesar Creek Township, Greene County, Ohio. John Horney Anderson, John and Elizabeth’s oldest son, married Hannah Painter who was the daughter of David Painter, an original Quaker settler of Caesar Creek Township.

James would have been in his mid-teens when the family arrived in Ohio. Their life there would have been that of pioneer farmers, they would have to clear the land, build homes, probably log cabins. Their clothing would have been home-spun wool and some linen. They may have raised cattle for food and milk, but a great deal of their meat would have come from the deer and fowl (probably turkeys) that were present in the woods. What schooling James received would likely have been learning to read the Bible, he might have had some tutoring in arithmetic but little beyond that.

At 23, James married Priscilla Coffin on 16 November 1809. Priscilla had come to Ohio with her mother, Elizabeth Robinson Coffin Hosier, and her step-father, Joseph Hosier. Elizabeth and Joseph were both Quakers. Priscilla had arrived in Caesar’s Creek five years before her marriage to James. Priscilla was sixteen when she and James were married.

James and Priscilla raised seven sons and one daughter: William (1810 – 1900), Rhoda (1812 – abt 881); John (1813 – 1885); Joseph (1815 – 1889); Preston (1820 – abt 1885); Harmon Anderson (1824 – 1885); and Abijah Coffin (1825 – 1918). William, Preston and Harmon left Ohio in the 1850s and after the Civil War to settle in and near Scranton, Greene County, Iowa. Harmon Anderson is my great-grandfather.

Both James and Priscilla were respected members of the Caesar Creek community and are buried in the Quaker Cemetery in that area.

Priscilla is a first cousin of Levi Coffin of Cincinnati, Ohio, their grandfather was William Coffin. Levi Coffin has been called the “President of the Underground Railroad.” Given this relationship, their residence in the Miami Valley of Ohio and their Quaker background, it is quite probable that the family was host to slaves fleeing the South and using this underground railroad through Ohio to reach Canada. I have no supporting evidence for this speculation, but it would certainly seem plausible given the Quaker connection, their place along the route and the relationship to Levi Coffin.

We will follow Harmon in the next generation in some detail. Here I will only mention that Harmon served in the Union Army, a clear violation of his Quaker pacifist background, but an action compatible with the probable family beliefs about slavery.

10. James Anderson (John3, James2, James1) was born on 3 Nov 1786 in Delaware, died on 27 Dec 1858 in Greene County, Ohio at age 72, and was buried in 1858 in Ceaser Creek Quaker Cemetery, Greene County, Ohio.

James married Priscilla Coffin, daughter of Abijah Coffin and Elizabeth Robinson, on 16 Nov 1809 near Xenia, Greene County, Ohio. Priscilla was born on 29 Jul 1793 in Guilford County, North Carolina, died on 25 May 1853 in Xenia, Greene County, Ohio at age 59, and was buried in 1853 in Ceaser Creek Quaker Cemetery, Greene County, Ohio. Another name for Priscilla was Priscilla Anderson.

Anderson: Fourth Generation — 2 Comments

  1. William Anderson and Lydia Horney Anderson are my Great-great grandparents. My Great-grandmother and grandfather-Rhoda and Joshua Rozell (Roselle). I have connected a lot of people but mostly concentrated on names/people my Mom and two of her siblings talked with me about. Before my Mom passed, I promised her that I would learn about her family. The one piece of information that I would like to find is where Rhoda is buried. Everything else I will work to complete but the search is winding down. If you have this bit of information, I can perhaps give you names, dates etc of that group at the very least.
