These two portraits were originally published in The Anderson Story in 1968. The portraits are very probably from about 1885, Lydia died in 1891 and William in 1900. William is the oldest of James Anderson and Priscilla Coffin Anderson’s eight children.

William and Lydia lived in Jefferson Township, Greene County, Iowa. They came to this location in 1856 with the Betebenner and Snodgrass Families. William’s brothers Preston, Harmon and Abijah Coffin Anderson joined him over the next couple of decades.

Maude Anderson Davis, second from left in the back row, is one of the principals in the creation of The Anderson Story. Others in this portrait undoubtedly contributed to that record as well.

In 1930 Sarah Anderson Snodgrass’s son, Charles Snodgrass wrote up the interesting story of the Anderson, Betebenner and Snodgrass families’ wagon trip from Ohio to Iowa.

Margaret Horney

Harmon Anderson is William’s younger brother, the sixth child and fifth son of James Anderson and Priscilla Coffin. Harmon married Margaret Horney in 1851, Margaret was 17 and Harmon 27. Harmon was working on the Horney farm in 1850 along with his next younger brother, Abijah Coffin and a cousin of Margaret.

Harmon and Margaret moved from Ohio to Scranton, Greene County Ohio about 1867, after Harmon was mustered out of the Union Army at the end of the Civil War. Harmon owned and operated a hardware store in Scranton.

These two portraits were in the possession of Harmon’s grand-daughter, Mary Holmes Anderson McKinney. They were scanned from the collection held by Mary’s oldest daughter, Margaret McKinney Brown

These two images were taken from “The Anderson Story.” Harmon’s is a copy of the original portrait above, the photo for Margaret was used as a substitute for the portrait above in the original publication.

The photo of Margaret is probably from the late 1880s.

  1. I am a descendant of Samuel W Horn/Horney and his wife Margaret or LW, unknown last name. Samuel was born in 1818, in Tennessee or Kentucky. Just wondered if you had any additional information on this family line. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

    • Kristen,

See my email to you. I have not really begun in depth work on the Horney line so cannot definitively say I do or do not have information about Samuel W. Horn/Horney and his wife.
