Anderson: Fifth Generation:
Children of Esther Anderson and James Horney
Esther Anderson is the oldest of John and Elizabeth Horney Anderson’s children. She married a first cousin, James Horney. She and James had seven children, five of whom appear to have achieved adult hood. This page reports on those five families.
The three oldest children, John, William and Hannah married brothers and sisters in the Thomas family in Fayette County, Ohio. John married Elizabeth Thomas in May of 1825, William married Elizabeth’s sister, Catherine in September of 1825, and Hannah married Thomas sister’s brother, John Thomas in May of 1826.
Each of the five children are included here along with their spouses and children. I will add a brief statement about each one to help provide a context as to where they fit in the family line.
I do not plan to follow descendants from this part of the lineage as it is pretty well removed from our direct lineage. Information is provided here so that any descendants of this line who choose to do so can see how they relate to our line. All of these families are 1st cousins 3 times removed of the author.
Anderson: Fifth Generation
11. John HORNEY/Elizabeth THOMAS
John Horney is the oldest child of Esther Anderson and James Horney. He was born in Fayette County, Ohio and probably died there, though I have no evidence of this fact. In my early research of this family I had not found anything other than his birth to Esther and James Horney.
In July of 2011 I discovered the Williams and Frank Family Tree by K.W. Coburn that confirmed my suspicion that the oldest three Horney children had selected mates from the same family. The Thomas family came to Ohio from Virginia and settled close to the Horney family in Ohio. John was 21 when he married Elizabeth in 1825. She was 16.
John and Elizabeth were living in Jefferson Township, Fayette County, Ohio in 1830, they had no children. Their place was just a few away from John’s father-in-law, Moses Thomas. The couple was located again in 1840 in Jefferson Township, Fayette County, Ohio. They were on a farm close to Elizabeth’s father, Moses Thomas. This census indicates that the couple had four children, 3 sons between 1 and 9 and a daughter under the age of 5. Charles Waddell and James Harney say that the couple had a daughter, Ester, born in 1831. This does not match up with the census records of 1840.
Presumably this family lived out their lives in Ohio. I located the couple in the 1830 and 1840 federal censuses, but could not find them in the 1850 census. The presence of John Horney in the 1840 census indicates his probable death to be sometime after that census.
11. John Horney/Elizabeth Thomas
11. John Horney (Esther Anderson4, John3, James2, James1) was born in 1804 in Fayette County, Ohio.
John married Elizabeth Thomas, daughter of Moses Thomas and Catherine Williams, on 24 May 1825 in Fayette County, Ohio.
The child from this marriage was:
F i. Ester Horney was born on 12 Jun 1831 and died on 31 Aug 1900 at age 69.
Anderson: Fifth Generation
12. William HORNEY/Catherine THOMAS
William Horney is the second child and son of Elizabeth Anderson and James Horney. He was born in Fayette County, Ohio 15 October 1807. William followed the lead of his older brother John and married Catherine Thomas sister of John’s wife Elizabeth 4 September 1825. The Thomas family lived close to the Horney family. William and Catherine were both 18 at the time of their marriage.
The couple is presumed to have born one child, Lydia born in August of 1826. According to the genealogy of Fonda Carroll Catherine died about 2 years after the birth of her daughter. I have been unable to confirm this information.
I have also not been able to locate the family in the census records in Ohio over the time span that William and family would have been likely to be in Ohio.
12. William Horney/Catherine Thomas
12. William Horney (Esther Anderson4, John3, James2, James1) was born on 15 Oct 1807 in Fayette County, Ohio.
William married Catherine Thomas, daughter of Moses Thomas and Catherine Williams, on 4 Sep 1825 in Fayette County, Ohio. Catherine was born about 1807 and died about 1828 about age 21.
The child from this marriage was:
F i. Lydia Horney was born on 22 Aug 1826 in Ohio and died on 17 Jul 1916 in Paint twp, Fayette Co., Ohio. at age 89.
Anderson: Fifth Generation
13. Hannah HORNEY/John THOMAS
Hannah Horney is the oldest daughter and third child of Esther Anderson and James Horney. Hannah was born in 1809 in Fayette County, Ohio. She is the third and last Horney child in this family to marry into the Thomas family when she married John Thomas 4 May 1826 in Ohio. Hannah was 17 and John 26 when they married.
Hannah and John had eight children: James, Elizabeth, Sarah Catherine, Moses, Esther, John A., Kate, and David. Hannah died sometime between 1850 and 1860. The 1850 census shows the family intact in Stokes, Madison County, Ohio. In 1860 John is living with his oldest son, James, in West Point, White County, Indiana. The census records suggest that he spent the remainder of his life in Indiana with his son James.
This narrative seems plausible but there are some questions that come to mind: What happened to the younger children? If we assume that Hannah lived till 1860, her youngest children David and Kate would have been only 15 (assuming 1845 is the correct birth date for Kate). Neither of these children show in the 1860 census that has John living with his oldest son in Indiana.
13. Hannah Horney/John Thomas
13. Hannah Horney (Esther Anderson4, John3, James2, James1) was born in 1809 in Fayette County, Ohio.
Hannah married John Thomas, son of Moses Thomas and Catherine Williams, on May 4, 1826. John was born on 4 Jul 1800.
Children from this marriage were:
M i. James Thomas was born in 1827.
F ii. Elizabeth Thomas was born on 11 Jul 1829 and died on 22 Aug 1922 at age 93.
F iii. Sarah C. Thomas was born on 4 May 1834 and died on 27 Jul 1916 at age 82.
M iv. Moses Thomas .
F v. Esther Thomas .
M vi. John A. Thomas .
F vii. Kate Thomas .
M viii. David Thomas .
Anderson: Fifth Generation
14. Paris HORNEY/Deborah BLUE
Paris Horney is the fourth child of James Horney and Esther Anderson, he was born 22 February 1810 and died 3 May 1855. When he was 26, he married Deborah Blue, daughter of John Michael Blue and Catherine NEWMAN, on 16 Oct 1836 in Madison County, Ohio.
Deborah Blue was born on 25 Aug 1811 in Ross Co., Ohio as the seventh child of John Michael Blue and Catherine NEWMAN. She had eight siblings, namely: William, Mariah, Maria, Michael, Elizabeth, John Michael, Hulda, and Susan. She died on 05 Jun 1893 in Paris Twp, Union County, Ohio (Age: 81).
Deborah and Paris had ten children, eight who survived to adulthood: John Michael, James Anderson, Jethro Paris, Johiel Joseph, Julia Ann Kathryn, Mary E., Esther Jane, Esten (born in 1853) and Daniel P. according to my records. The couple had at least one child that did not survive long enough to receive a name for the record.
Paris died quite young, he was only 45 at the time of his death. Note that his uncle, Paris Horney who married Lydia Anderson, also died quite young. I see no evidence that Deborah Blue remarried after the death of her husband even though her youngest child was less than a year old at the time of her husband’s death. Neither of Paris and Deborah’s two youngest children seem to have survived beyond their first decade of life.
Deborah and Paris lived in Jackson, Union, Ohio in 1850 (Age: 39) with six of their children. Paris died in 1855 and Deborah continued to live in Paris, Union, Ohio, United States in 1860 (Age: 49) with all of her children. Her sons, John, James and Jethro were old enough that they continued to operate the farm and support their mother and younger siblings.
In 1870 the family still lived in Paris, Union County, Ohio. Deborah was 49. Her oldest son is operating the farm, supporting his mother and two younger sisters: Julia and Esther. She was buried in Jun 1893 in Union County, Ohio, USA.
In 1880, Deborah is living with her daughter, Esther Jane (Jennie) in Cold Spring, Shelby County, Illinois. Her second oldest son, James A. Horney lives immediately next to this household. The age of James A. Horney is close to that listed for Deborah Blue Horney’s son James Anderson Horney. The James A. in this census record was born in 1842, Deobrah’s son James Anderson Horney was born in 1840 according to the sources I have used for this family.
Finally, the place of death for Deborah Blue Horney is given as Paris Township, Union County, Ohio. If she was living in Illinois with her daughter and son-in-law it seems unlikely she would have died in Ohio. Very likely, Deborah died in Illinois and was then buried in the family plot in Paris Township, Union County, Ohio.
14. Paris Horney/Deborah Blue
14. Paris Horney (Esther Anderson4, John3, James2, James1) was born on 23 Mar 1810 in Fayette County, Ohio and died on 3 May 1855 in Taylor, Union, Ohio, USA at age 45.
Paris married Deborah Blue, daughter of John Michael Blue and Catherine Newman, on 16 Oct 1836 in Madison County, Ohio. Deborah was born 25 auf 1811 in Ross Co., Ohio and died on 8 Jun 1895 in Paris, Union, Ohio.

15. Anderson HORNEY/Mahala JACKSON
Anderson Horney is the youngest child of Esther Anderson and James Horney. Anderson was born 23 February 1819 in Jeffersonville, Fayette County, Ohio and died 21 October 1904 in Beason, Logan County, Illinois.
When he was 23, he married Mahala Jackson on 30 Oct 1842 in Brownsville, Licking, Ohio.
Mahala Jackson was born on 14 January 1822 in Jamestown, Greene Co., Ohio. She died on 7 January 1905 in Lincoln, Logan, Illinois, United States Of America (Age: 83). When Mahala was 20, she married Anderson Horney on 30 October 1842 in Brownsville, Licking, Ohio
The 1850 Census shows the family living in Richland, Clinton County Ohio. The family at that time consisted of four children: Joseph M, age 7; Emily, age 5; Walter S., age 3; and Mary M. age 1.
By the mid-1860s the family was living in Illinois. Anderson registered for the Civil War draft in 1863, at that time he was living in Lincoln, Illinois. His age was given as 44 on 1 July 1863. Anderson apparently did not serve in the Union Army during the Civil War as I have encountered no records indicating a term or unit of service.
The Internal Revenue Services assessed Anderson for taxes in Illinois in 1865.
The 1870 census reports the family living in East Lincoln, Logan, Illinois, Anderson is farming (as he was in the 1850 census). The household consists of four children: Walter, age 23; Edward age 19; John age 15 and Lucy age 6. Emma/Emily and Joseph, the two older children, have moved away from their parent’s home by this time.
Anderson and Mahala are recorded in the 1880 and 1900 censuses for Illinois. Anderson died in Illinois on 21 October 1904 at the age of 86. Mahala followed him in death less than a year later on 7 January 1905 at the age of 83.
