Anderson: Fifth Generation
Children of Rhoda Anderson/William Horney

These families are sparsely represented in the various genealogical records to which I have access. Many family historians at Ancestry.com only mention the children of Rhoda Anderson and William Horney. The most information provided is that of a spouse, rarely are any children listed. I have been able to tease out some additional, plausible information about a few families from the census records. If neither a child nor his/her spouse survived to 1850 and later, then I had no way of definitively identifying the family in the federal census records. I was able to locate apparent marriage records in the Indiana archives.

Anderson: Fifth Generation:
Esther Horney/John Peterson

Esther: born 1809, married John Peterson in 1833 in Montgomery County, Indiana. I may have found a record for the family in 1850 – it is for an Easter Peterson and John Peterson. The record indicates four children: William age 13; Elizabeth age 10; Paris age 7 and Julia age 1. I question this because the age for Easter (Esther) – 35 – places her birth year as about 1815 or possibly 1816. One genealogical history at Ancestry.com has the birth year as 1816, others have it as 1808. I had originally entered the 1808 date based on information provided by Evelyn Halkyard Vohland in her book Betebenner – Horney and Allied Families. Ms. Vohland provides no documentation for this birth date.

If the 1850 census is correct, then the birth date for Esther (Easter) may well be about 1815 or 16 as suggested by a number of family historians who have recorded this couple at Ancestry.com.

Assuming the 1850 census record for John and Easter (Esther) Peterson is correct, then we find the family again in the 1860 and 1870 census records. The 1860 record shows John, age 54 is a farmer and was born in Virginia. His children in the household are William J., age 24, Parish [Paris] H. age 17, Julia A. age 11 and Martha age 7. There are several related families listed on this same census page: Paris Horney and his wife Keziah Ketchum and their family; Jonathon and Mary Royer and their family; John and Nancy Horney and their family.

In 1870 the household has shifted a bit, it now consists of John, age 64, his daughter, Elizabeth age 27, his daughter Martha and three very young children – Lucy M. Peterson age 5, Lucy M. age 3 and John W age one month. There are also a number of laborers in the household as well.

Since we do not find Esther in any of the records after 1850 I am going to assume that she died between 1850 and 1860. John probably died between 1870 and 1880 as there is no record for any John Peterson in the 1880 federal census.

The cumulative evidence here suggests that the 1850 census record is indeed for Esther Horney and John Peterson. All of the children were born in Indiana and the families on the surrounding farms fit with the typical pattern of these Quaker related families.

Esther Horney/John Peterson

Esther married John Peterson on 27 May 1833 in Montgomery County, Indiana. As indicated in the brief biography of this family, I have located census evidence that indicates they did have at least five children. This family group record will be added when I update the information for this site.

Anderson: Fifth Generation:
Lydia Horney/Bowen Babb

Lydia: born 1810 in Ohio. Married Bowen Babb in 1820 in Ohio; married Jonathon Royer in 1840 in Indiana.

Other than the sketchy outline of events above, I have found no other information in my searches of Ancestry.com, WorldConnect and other on-line resources. Lydia’s marriage to Bowen Babb is recorded in an Ohio Marriages index obtained from the Greene County, Ohio genealogical society. Later marriage of Lydia to Jonathon Royer was found on Ancestry.com.

I would appreciate receiving additional information about this couple from anyone who has been researching them.

Lydia Horney/Bowen Babb

Lydia married Bowen Babb in 1820 in Ohio. The narrative above suggests children, these will be entered and up-dated here at a later date.

Anderson: Fifth Generation:
Peter Horney/Mary Coyner

Peter was born about 1810 in Fayette County, Ohio, the first son and third child of Rhoda Anderson and William Horney. He and Mary Coyner (Coiner) were married 13 March 1838 in Clinton Count Ohio. Mary was born about 1818 in Indiana and died in 1896 in Indiana, according to Clay Ramsey in his family tree, Ramsey Large at Ancestry.com. I did find a burial place for Peter Horney in Tippecanoe County, Indiana through Find-a-Grave, the date of death is 1847.

No additional information found (1 September 2011) for either Peter Horney or Mary Coyner, other than the marriage record mentioned above. There are family genealogies at Ancestry.com but these have no more information than what I have here. In fact, at least one served as a spring board to find this information

Peter Horney/Mary Conyner

Peter married Mary Coyner in 1838 in Clinton County, Ohio. I have run across the Coyner surname in my research but have not found any connections to this couple

Anderson: Fifth Generation:
27. Sarah Horney/Joseph Royer

Sarah: born 1815 in Ohio, married Joseph Royer in 1837 in Montgomery County, Indiana. May have died in 1849 or 1850. Joseph Royer b. abt 1809 in Virginia. Joseph married second, Angeline Michael, b. 1830.

This is another family that has been difficult to locate definitively in the various on-line records. Sarah Horney was originally added to my family history from the work of Evelyn Halkyard Vohland in Betebenner – Horney and Allied Families. Sarah’s mother, Rhoda Anderson Horney is part of our direct line and is documented in Ms. Vohland’s source.

Sarah Horney is fourth child, third daughter of Rhoda Anderson and William Horney, born about 1815 in Ohio. She would have moved with her parents from Ohio to eastern Indiana by the mid 1820s. She married Joseph Royer 7 November 1837 in Montgomery County, Indiana. Sarah and Joseph had one daughter – Rhoda A. born abt 1839 in Indiana.

Sarah probably died sometime in the 1840s, probably before 1849 when Joseph Royer married second, Angeline Michael 13 February 1849 in Montgomery County, Indiana.

Joseph, Angeline, Rhoda A. and a Sarah Royer are found in the 1850 census of Sugar Creek Township, Montgomery County, Indiana. Joseph is 41, Angeline 20, Rhoda is 11 and Sarah is less than one year old.

I could not locate Joseph and Angeline in the 1860 census, but did find them in the 1870 census for Madison Township, Montgomery County, Indiana. Joseph is 61, Aneline (Angeline) age is given as 38. The family now consists of five children: Sarah, age 20 (transcribed as 2); John W. age 18; William age 16; Mary J. age 15 and Abraham age 12.

I did not follow up further on this family.

Anderson: Fifth Generation:
28. Paris Horney/Rebecca Boyd

Paris Horney was born 6 May 1819 in Ohio, the fifth child and second son of Rhoda Anderson and William Horney. The family moved from Ohio to Indiana in the mid-1820s where they settled among several Quaker families in Montgomery and Tippecanoe counties of Indiana.

Paris married Rebecca Boyd on 21 May 1844 in Montgomery County, Indiana. Rebecca was born about 1826 in Ohio and died 2 February 1865 in Indiana. Paris and Rebecca had four children: Mary, born in 1846 and died in 1859; William C. born in 1849; Jesse, born in 1851 and Martha born in 1853, died in 1870.

The family is recorded in the 1850 census of Sugar Creek Township, Montgomery County, Indiana. Paris is 31, Rebecca is 24, their two oldest children are Mary, age 3 and William C. age 1. The family is living in the household of Paris’ mother, Rhoda Anderson Horney. Also in the household is Paris’ younger brother, John. Paris’ cousin, Parris Horney the son of Lydia Anderson Horney and her husband Paris Horney are living on a neighboring farm. Paris’ sister’s husband, Joseph Royer and his second wife, are also neighbors.

Careful and extensive searches of the census records of 1860 and 1870 have failed to turn up any additional information about this family. I have no record of the death of Paris, but according to Clay Ramsey, Rebecca died in 1865.

28. Paris Horney/Rebecca Boyd

28. Paris Horney (Rhoda Anderson4, John3, James2, James1) was born about 1819 in Fayette County, Ohio.

Anderson: Fifth Generation:
John D. Horney

John D. Horney is the sixth child and third son of Rhoda Anderson and William Horney. John was born 19 February 1823 in Ohio. He moved with the family to Indiana shortly after his birth. I little information about John other than his birth and death dates. He died relatively young at the age of 33 in 1856. He is buried in the Horney Cemetery in Lauramie Township, Tippecanoe Co., Indiana.

John is recorded living with his mother, Rhoda Anderson Horney, and his older brother Paris in the 1850 census of Sugar Creek Township, Montgomery Co., Indiana. His death is documented in the Find-a-Grave data base. An image of his tombstone may be seen here: John Horney tombstone.

John D Horney

No additional information on children/descendants of John D. Horney.

Anderson: Fifth Generation:
29. Mary Ann Horney/John Coyner

Mary Ann: born 1827 in Ohio, died 1900 in Indiana. Married John Coyner, 1844 in Montgomery Co., Indiana. Two children – Rhody (Rhoda?) b. 1847 and Phebe b. 1850

Mary Ann Horney is the seventh child and fourth daughter of Rhoda Anderson and William Horney. Mary Ann was born 2 November 1827 in Fayette County, Ohio. The family moved from Ohio to Indiana some time after Mary Ann’s birth, possibly in the early 1830s.

Mary Ann married John Coyner on 8 August 1844 in Montgomery Co., Indiana. She and John had two daughters, Rhoda (1847 – ) and Phebe (1850 – ).

Mary Ann and John are living in Perry Township, Clinton Co., Indiana when the 1850 census was taken. The household consists of Mary Ann, age 23, John age 26, Rhody age 3 and Phebe, age 3 months.

We next find the Coyner family in the 1860 census of Madison Township, Montgomery Co., Indiana. Mary Ann’s mother, Rhoda Anderson Horney is living with the family. John is 38, Mary Ann 33, Rhoda is 13 and Phebe is 10. The household also includes a Rhoda A. Coyner and Thomas Keing.

I was unable to locate Mary Ann Horney Coyner in the 1870 census records. John Coyner died in 1862 and is buried in the Horney Cemetery, Tippecanoe Co., Indiana (tombstone photo).

Mary Ann Horney Coyner and her daughter Phebe were located in the 1880 census of Madison Township, Montgomery Co., Indiana. Mary Ann is listed as Mary Coynert, age 53, her daughter is listed as Coynert Coynert and 30 years of age. These ages match up well with what I have been able to discover about Mary Ann. For some reason the census taker wrote the name incorrectly and did not get the given name for Phebe and instead repeated the surname in the location usually reserved for the given name.

Mary Ann Horney Coyner died 18 March 1900 and is buried in the Horney Cemetery, Lauramie Twp., Tippecanoe, Co., Indiana (tombstone photo). Her parents are recorded on this tombstone as well.

I have searched the census records of 1900 for the relevant townships in Tippecanoe Co., and Montgomery Co., Indiana but did not find any additional records for Mary Ann Horney Coyner.
