Anderson Descendants:
Documented families of the third generation

I have documented three families of this generation: John Anderson/Elizabeth Horney; Daniel Anderson/Jane Dinsmore; and Elijah Anderson/Susannah Cain. John was born in 1755 and died in 1816, his wife Elizabeth was born 1758 in Maryland and died about 1820 in Ohio. Daniel was born in 1771 in Delaware and died 1861 in Ohio. Eliza was born in 1773 in Delaware and died 1856 in Ohio.

As I have worked with this and the previous generation, I am confident only of the connection of John Anderson and Elizabeth Horney to our line. Daniel and Elija Anderson are confirmed brothers of John only if we can establish that John is indeed the son of James Anderson and Ann Clifton. Much of the evidence that I have located questions this fact, but I have continued with the presumed relations based largely upon circumstantial evidence: place of birth, pattern of migration and so forth.

John and Elizabeth are our direct ancestors, they were married in Maryland, moved with their children to North Carolina after the revolutionary war and then to Ohio in 1801. their family was raised in Ohio and grew up there before moving on further west. By the time of his death John owned considerable land in Ohio which was divided among his sons. John and Elizabeth had five children: Esther, Lydia, John Horney, Rhoda, and James

Daniel Anderson and his younger brother, Elija, may be part of our family. Most likely they are half brothers – note the major age discrepancy between these two and their presumed older brother, John. The records of where they originated (Delaware/Maryland) and where they lived in the early 1800s (Clark County, Ohio) suggests there is some connection with John Anderson, our immediate ancestor.

Daniel married Jane Dinsmore in 1817 in Ohio. I have been unable to find any additional information on the Dinsmore surname. I would like to know if Jane is related to Amarilla Dinsmore who married John and Elizabeth’s grandson, William Anderson in 1831 in Ohio. I have identified only one son for Daniel and Jane: Thomas Massey

The youngest of John’s presumed brothers, Elija, married Susannah Cain in 1786 in Ohio. Elija and Susannah had four children: Elija, Mary Jane, Rueben and Susannah. Elija died in 1856 in Clark County, Ohio. I have no death information for Susannah Cain.

Anderson: Third Generation
John Anderson and Elizabeth Horney

John Anderson and Elizabeth Horney are the ancestors for which the evidence as part of our line is strongest. Probably both were Quakers or at least associated with Quakers in Delaware/Maryland, North Carolina and Ohio. John and Elizabeth were married in Talbot County, Maryland where Elizabeth’s parents lived. Their children were all born here and later moved with the family to North Carolina and eventually in 1801 to Caesar’s Creek in Greene County, Ohio.

Life in the early part of the 19th Century was pretty much uneventful. John and Elizabeth owned and farmed large piece of land, about 400 acres were passed on in his will — 100 to Elizabeth; 200 to John Horney Anderson; and finally 100 acres to James Anderson. A provision of the will was that upon Elizabeth’s death her share of the estate was to pass on to James Anderson.

The Anderson family continued to live among the Quakers in Greene County, Ohio. The youngest son, James married Priscilla Coffin. Priscilla Coffin is the first declared/acknowledged Quaker in the line. This marriage links our line to that of the Coffin Family of Nantucket Island and to some of the very earliest European settlers in North America. Priscilla Coffin Anderson is buried in the Caesar Creek Quaker Cemetery in Greene County, Ohio.

John and Elizabeth had five children: Esther, Lydia, John Horney, Rhoda and James. The three daughters all married first cousins, sons of William Horney, Elizabeth’s brother. An Anderson will marry into this same line two generations later when Harmon Anderson (Elizabeth’s grandson) will marry Margaret Horney(William’s granddaughter).

John died in 1816, Elizabeth about 4 years later. Two of the children continued to live in Ohio: Esther and her husband James Horney and James Anderson and his wife Priscilla Coffin. Two of the children move on to Quaker communities in Illinois and Indiana: Lydia who married first Paris Horney and second Aaron Mendenhall after Paris’ early and untimely death (Aaron was part of the Quaker community); John Horney Anderson and his wife Hannah Painter also move to Indiana. In Indiana they did settle among Quakers although Hannah had been “condemned for marrying out of Union” by the Meeting House in Ohio.

  1. My grandmother Adeline’s maiden name was Anderson. William, her father died in Hastings Regional Hosp. of a brain tumor. His father was John Horney Anderson wife Adeline. However, .. grandmother never told us she was named for her grandmother. She was always sad she didn’t have a middle name. I’m researching Dave and Lucinda Anderson and wondering what happened to David since he died at age of 39. Very interesting to know more about your family awaiting your reply Deanna

  2. Hello! I’m doing some research on the family of Dr. Thomas Anderson who was born in Morgan County, Indiana and died in Anderson County, Kansas. According to a book of biographies of well-known people in Missouri (where Thomas lived for a time), his parents were Joel P. Anderson and Lydia Vass. It then states that Joel’s father was Elijah and Elijah’s father was Joshua, all three hailing from Virginia. However, on census records for Joel is lists his birthplace as Ohio. On the 1840 Census it lists Joel living next to an older man named Elijah (assuming it’s his father), but I am not able to find any other concrete records that illustrate this connection.
There are some sources out there that suggest Joel’s parents were Elijah Anderson and Mary Thatcher, however this information is questionable because there are no sources to back it up.
Your information here caught my eye because of the connection to Ohio and the name Reuben. Thomas Anderson named one of his sons Reuben (b. 1875), although I guess that could have been a common name then. I was wondering if in your own research you’ve come across this Anderson family or know of any potential connection to your own.
    Thanks!

  4. The Horneys were Nicholites, or “New Quakers,” a related sect that flourished on the Delmarva peninsula, and later in piedmont NC, between about 1750 and about 1800. Eventually, neither the Quakers nor the Nicholites could tell much of a difference between the groups, and the Nicholites merged with the older and better-established Quakers.
