Anderson: Fifth Generation:
Children of John Horney Anderson/Hannah Painter

John Horney Anderson and Hannah Painter had five children: David born about 1808, died 1915; Martha born about 1809 and died about 1880; Elizabeth born about 1810 – no death date; Jesse born about 1812; and John Horney, born 1813 and died in 1894.

David, Martha, Jesse and John Horney married and had children. These children and their families are in the following biographies.

These children became closely linked with the Cameron Family in both Indiana and Buchanan County, Iowa. Lucinda Oglesbee Anderson, David’s wife is buried in the same cemetery in which David’s brother John Horney Anderson and his family are buried. John Horney married into the Cameron family as did two of his older brother’s children — Elizabeth Ann married Thomas Cameron, Jonathon Horney married Adeline Cameron.

Anderson: Fifth Generation:
24. David Anderson/Lucinda Oglesbee

David: born 1808, married Lucinda Oglesbee 1828. Born in Ohio, lived in Indiana, wife lived in Iowa. Children: Elizabeth Ann (1829-1914); Jonathon Horney (1831-1905); Phebe (1833-1902); Isiah (1835-1915); Eli (1837-1887); and David (1839-1850).

David Anderson is the first child and oldest son of John Horney Anderson and Hannah Painter. David was born in 1808 in Ohio ā€“ I do not have nor have I discovered David’s exact date of birth. The family had moved to Ohio in the early 1800s when John and Elizabeth came from Delaware by way of North Carolina. David married Lucinda Oglesbee 21 August 1838 in Wilmington, Clinton County Ohio. Their first four children were born in Ohio, the last two in Indiana. Elizabeth Ann, their first daughter, was born 8 June 1829 in Greene County, Ohio; Jonathon Horney was born 12 July 1831 in Xenia, Greene County, Ohio; Phebe was born 9 April 1833 in Green, Adams County, Ohio; Isiah was born 24 March 1835 in Ohio; Eli was born 9 April 1837 in Indiana; and David was born in 1839 in Tippecanoe, Tippecanoe County, Ohio.

The first official records we have of the family are those of the federal census. David had died in 1839 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana at the age of 31. Lucinda did not marry again and is recorded in the 1850 census as living with her daughter Elizabeth (Eliza in this census) and her husband Thomas Cameron. All of Lucinda and David’s children have grown and left home.

Lucinda moved from Ohio to Iowa live with Eliza (Elizabeth) and her husband, Thomas, for the next two decades (1860 and 1870). Her sons David and Isiah have also moved from Ohio to Iowa and live in the immediate area of Elizabeth and Thomas Stephenson Cameron.

She next takes up residence with her son Isiah by the 1880 census in Washington Township, Buchanan County, Iowa. Lucinda is 73.

The 1885 Iowa census reports her residence with Isiah and his wife Jane in 1885. Lucinda died 2 December 1892 in Iowa.

Anderson: Fifth Generation:
25. Martha Anderson/James S. Fenner

Martha: born abt 1809 in Ohio, probably moved to Iowa in early 1800s. Married James S. Fenner 1830 in Greene County, Ohio. Had five children: John H. (1831- ); David (1833- ); Jesse (1835- ); Bowen B (1837- ); and Elizabeth (1841).

Martha is the second child and oldest daughter of John Horney Anderson and Hannah Painter. Martha was born abt 1809 in Ohio and died after 1885 in Iowa. I do not have any sources or data on either her birth or death. She was living in Polk County, Iowa as recorded in the 1885 Iowa state census. She was living at that time with her son, John and his two children, James and Lulu.

Martha married James S. Fenner 9 September 1830 in Greene County, Ohio. Martha and James had five children: John H (1831 – ); David (1833 – ); Jesse (1835 – ); Bowen B. (1837 – ); and Elizabeth (1841 – ).

James died sometime between 1870 and 1880 in Iowa, he is recorded as head of household in 1870, in 1880, Martha is head of the household. Martha’s son, John and his son and daughter are living with her. John is a blacksmith, the two grand-children are in school, James W. age 14 and Lulu P. age 12.

In 1850 the family is living in Bloomington, McLean County, Illinois, Martha’s mother, Hannah Painter Anderson is living with them. The five children are also present in the household: John is 19, David is 17, Jesse is 15, Bowen is 13 and Elizabeth is 9. James and John are blacksmiths and David’s occupation is given as laborer.

Between 1850 and 1860 James and Martha with Martha’s mother, Hannah Painter Anderson, had moved to Madison, Polk County, Iowa. According to the 1860 census record, James continues to earn his living as a blacksmith. I did not find any other family members close by in Madison.

James and Martha are still living in Madison, Polk County, Iowa in 1870, though James is now a farmer. I searched the census record pages in the immediate vicinity to see if there were any other family members nearby, but did not find any.

After James death sometime before the 1880 census, John Fenner (James and Martha’s oldest son) and his two children have come to live with Martha in Madison, Iowa. John is still a blacksmith and perhaps has taken on the shop that his father had. John’s two children, James and Lulu are 14 and 12, respectively.

The last recorded record for Martha is the 1885 Iowa census. Martha is living in the town of Andrews, Jefferson Township, Polk County, Iowa with her son, John and his two children James and Lulu, now 19 and 17.

I have no further records for Martha.

25. Martha Anderson/James S Fenner

25. Martha Anderson (John Horney4, John3, James2, James1) was born about 1809 in Ohio and died after 1885 in Iowa.

Martha married James S. Fenner, son of Stephen Fenner (1784-1829) and Mary Ann Brouse (1781-1864), 9 Sep 1830 in Ohio. James was born about 1804 in Pennsylvania and died between 1870 and 1880 in Madison, Polk, Iowa, USA.

Children from this marriage were:

M    i. John H. Fenner was born in 1831 in Ohio.

M    ii. David Fenner was born in 1833 in Ohio.

M    iii. Jesse Fenner was born in 1835 in Ohio.

M    iv. Bowen B. Fenner was born in 1837 in Indiana.

F    v. Elizabeth Fenner was born in 1841 in Indiana.

Anderson: Fifth Generation:
Elizabeth Anderson*

I have no records to show that Elizabeth ever married, therefore not descendants

Anderson: Fifth Generation:
Jesse Anderson/Amanda Bowers

Jesse: Born 1812, Greene County, Ohio, probably moved to Iowa in the early 19th century. Married Amanda Bowers, 1839 in Iowa. Jesse and Amanda had four children: Mary (1840- ); Rhoda (1843 – ); Jefferson (1844 – ); and Tina (1846 – ). All of the children were born in Indiana.

Jesse Anderson is the fourth child, second son of John Horney Anderson and Hannah Painter. Jesse was born 7 November 1813 in Ohio. He died 24 Jan 1894 in Otterville, Buchanan, Iowa. He married Eliza Jane Cameron 26 December 1839. in Otterville, Buchanan, Iowa.

Jesse and Amanda were living in Lauramie Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana in 1850 with their four children: Mary age 10; Rhodia (Rhoda?) age 8; Jefferson age 6 and Tena age 4. All of the children are said to have been born in Indiana. Note that the estimated age of Amanda is incorrect in this census ā€“ her age is give as abt 23.

Jesse and Amanda are still in Lauramie Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana in 1860. Their family has now grown to five children: Mary now age 20; Rhoda age 18; Tena age 14 and twins Adinigha (Adinija?) and Aunoliss (Annalisa) age 6. The handwriting of the census taker is not easy to decipher in his record and I think that the transcriber made serious mistakes in translating the records for indexing. Rhoda was transcribed as ‘Kodeann,’ which is a reasonable approximation of what is written.

A manual search of the 1870 census pages for Lauramie Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana did not turn up any records for this family. Amanda is reported to have died in 1876 so would not be present in the 1880 census. Of course the family could have moved to another location, but I have not located any hint that this might have occurred ā€“ at least in my review/searches of the federal census records for 1870 and 1880.

26. Jesse Anderson/Amanda Bowers

26. Jesse Anderson (John Horney4, John3, James2, James1) was born in 1812 in Greene Co., Ohio, USA.

Jesse married Amanda Bowers, daughter of Abraham S. Bowers (1786-1863) and Elizabeth Bryant (1787-1868), on 7 Mar 1839 in Clintion, Greene County, Iowa.

Children from this marriage were:

F    i. Mary Anderson was born in 1840 in Indiana, USA.

F    ii. Rhoda Anderson was born in 1843 in Indiana, USA.

M    iii. Jefferson Anderson was born in 1844 in Indiana, USA.

F    iv. Tina Anderson was born in 1846 in Indiana, USA.

Anderson: Fifth Generation:
John Horney Anderson/Eliza Jane Cameron*

John Horney: born 1813, Ohio. Probably moved to and lived in Indiana. Married Eliza Jane Cameron in 1839 in Iowa. John and Eliza had six children: John J. (1841- ); Hannah E. (1843- ); David M. (1845-1911); Reece B. (1848- 1873); Mary A. (1850- 1865); and William A. (1853- ).

This family has not been an easy one to locate in the census records. According to several family histories, John and Eliza Jane were married in Iowa. I am presuming that John took his new bride back to Illinois where he was raised. Eliza Jane was born in Ohio and the first four children seem to have been born in Indiana as well. The family is recorded in the 1850 census of Lauramie Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. John is 36, [Eliza] Jane is recorded as 50, her actual age is 30. The children are John age 10, Hannah age 7, David age 6 and ‘Babb’ is 4.

In 1856 the family is recorded in Perry, Buchanan, Iowa census. John is 42, Eliza is 36. The family has now grown to six children: John J. age 15; Hannah E. age 13; David M. age 11; Reace B. age 9; Mary A. age 6 and William age 3. John’s nephew, Isaiah Anderson is living with this family.

I was unable to locate the family in the 1860 census records. Sometime between 1856 and the next census of 1870. However, I did locate records through the Iowa GenWeb project that provided birth and death dates for many of the members of this family. John’s first wife, Eliza Jane Cameron died 13 June 1857. John most likely married Amelia within a few years of Eliza Jane’s death.

The 1870 census records shows the household consisting of John, Amelia and John’s youngest son, William living in Washington Township, Buchanan, Iowa. John is a farmer and William is a farm laborer, probably helping out with his father’s farm.

John and Amelia are the entire household in 1880. They live in Washington Township, Buchanan County, Iowa, John is 66 and Amelia is 61. John will die in 1894, Amelia a few years earlier in 1889.

When this family group was completed I had not located any information relation to the children of John and Eliza Jane. I have since found documentation of the family in Indiana and Buchanan County, Iowa.

* No additional information about these individuals beyond that reported in the previous generation
